These icicles are a fairly typical roadside scene on the Seward Highway traveling south from Anchorage.
For those who are wondering just how much snow there can be in Alaska at a time when the locals were complaining about not having enough, well...
Here is a really neat picture of, well what else, snow
The only piece of the glaciers around Portage that were visible.
A nice roadside shot from a town called Indian. This was the only time I actually saw the sun during a 3+ day period.

One Amazing Day of Snowmobiling

All Snowmolbiles depart from the Last Chance Cafe in Hatcher Pass, about 90 miles north of Anchorage. The Cafe serves an amazing Espresso, and has lots of entertaining characters including Digger , a very warm dog.
The first step is to put on the� snow suit. It only takes about half an hour to get the thing, but it is well worth the effort considering it is between 15 and 20 degrees below zero.
Then you start to drive at about 10 mph out of the Cafe's lot and down through Hatcher Pass, following one of the many trails. During the middle of winter, the trails extend all the way to the top of those mountains.
At the end of the trail we reached an abandoned gold mine ,and a partially frozen stream , carving interesting shapes in the extremely thick snow.

Another Amazing Day Boating around the Kenai Fjords

The boat leaves from Seward , a small fishing town surrounded by huge snow-covered mountains.
As we leave the harbor we see the first of several bald eagles
